Harvey Cargill's Secret...

Oklahoma welder was illiterate - but once supervised over 100 other welders

This one was interesting to me because it's close to home in a couple of ways. I had a relative in the same spot, once. He couldn't read and couldn't tell anyone that he couldn't. According to the Norman, OK Transcript...

When he was in school, the fact he couldn't read wasn't a surprise to anyone. Teachers knew it, but passed him along because he was a good kid. He was bright, and especially good at math, but he couldn't read the textbooks.

"I couldn't keep up with the other kids. It was frustrating and embarrassing."

When he got to high school, he was even further behind, but "I was good at football, so they were happy to pass me on," he says, making the motion of a teacher signing the report card that held a lie. As an adult, he worked hard and became a skilled welder, at one time supervising 100 other welders. He held his secret close.

Best of luck to Mr. Cargill.
