More on the Bay Bridge welding scandal - will it ever be over?
Couple of news items on the Bay Bridge Scandal...
According to reports in the Oakland Tribune, there are new questions about the welding work on the Bay Bridge. The Tribune reports that welders on the bridge welded twice as fast as federal inspectors thought. The information comes from documents the paper obtained from Caltrans and its contractor, and follows allegations by welders who said they were pressured to hurry their work. The Federal Highway Administration says its probe into the bridge is not over. Computer modeling tests to see how the bridge will stand under stress and strain are scheduled.

According to Oakland's KTVU, welders who worked on the new span of the Bay Bridge connecting Oakland and San Francisco have sued, claiming they are ill from exposure to toxins. The suit, filed last week in Alameda County Superior Court by 43 plaintiffs, names bridge contractor KFM Joint Venture and its component companies Kiewit Pacific, Flatiron Construction and Manson Construction as defendants, as well as makers of welding rods and ceramic fiber materials used in the project.
